Domino’s Pizza

Domino is a game that involves laying down a series of dominoes so they all touch one another. It is most commonly played with a set of 28 tiles that are marked with either numbers or dots. The dots on a domino are called pips and may be either colored or blank. There are many different types of games that can be played using domino. A domino can also serve as a teaching tool for learning about addition and subtraction.

In the game of domino, each player takes a turn placing a domino edge to edge against another so that it shows a matching number on both ends or forms some other specified total. In doing so, the players build a chain of dominoes that grows gradually in length as each tile is played and touched by another. Dominoes can be placed side to side, vertically or horizontally. The most common material for dominoes is ivory, silver lip ocean pearl oyster shell (mother of pearl) or a dark hardwood such as ebony, with contrasting black or white pips inlaid or painted on. There are also sets made from other natural materials, including stone (such as marble, granite or soapstone); metals; ceramic clay; and even frosted glass.

The word domino is derived from the Latin dominus, meaning “lord.” The word was first used in English after 1750 but originated in France shortly after. The earlier sense of the word denoted a long hooded cloak worn with a mask at a carnival or at a masquerade. It may have been an allusion to the domino piece with its contrasting black and ivory faces or it could be that the pieces reminded people of a priest’s black domino contrasting with his surplice.

Domino’s Pizza was founded in Ypsilanti, Michigan by Dominick Monaghan and Frank Carney in 1960. Initially, the company specialized in delivering pizza to college students. This marketing strategy was successful and fueled rapid growth for the new franchise, which soon had locations in more than 200 cities and towns in the United States. In the 1990s, Domino’s expanded internationally and diversified its product offerings, which now include chicken wings, salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes and desserts.

The Domino effect is the concept that any event can cause a chain reaction, like a falling domino, that will eventually impact other events in the same way. It is a powerful metaphor that is often used to describe political events, such as the rise and fall of communist countries. However, the domino effect can be applied to other aspects of life as well.
